Program Learning Outcomes

In addition to meeting the University Learning Outcomes, Northwestern graduates will be able to:

Master of Acupuncture:

1. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of Chinese medical theory, the trajectories of channels, the locations of points and Chinese medical pattern differentiation (bian zheng). 
2. Identify the properties, functions and classifications of acupuncture points and channels.
3. Accurately compile all diagnostic data necessary for acupuncture treatment using the four examinations and other appropriate examinations.
4. Using the theories of Chinese medicine, develop a clinical diagnosis that is accurate and appropriate for the delivery of acupuncture treatment.
5. Based on the diagnostic findings, develop an acupuncture treatment plan, assessing its effectiveness and making modifications as needed.
6. Skillfully and safely execute an acupuncture treatment plan.
7. Recognize emergency situations or situations for which biomedical care or follow-up is needed, and take appropriate action.
8. Apply contemporary professional, ethical and legal standards in the delivery of acupuncture treatment.
9. Demonstrate clinical communication skills that are appropriate to all parties involved in the continuum of care.
10. Apply the basic principles of evidence informed medicine in acupuncture treatment.
11. Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary business models and the ability to establish an acupuncture practice in a private, integrative, or community-style health care setting.

Master of Chinese Medicine:

The following PLOs are recommended for the Masters of Chinese Medicine program in addition to PLOs # 1 through 11 above:

1. Using Chinese medical theory and the Four Examinations, develop a diagnosis that has the detail and sophistication necessary to treat or prevent illness with Chinese herbal medicine and dietary therapy.
2. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the properties, functions, dosages, indications and contraindications of a core list of Chinese herbs and food items.
3. Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of the principles of combination and formulation of Chinese herbs, focusing on a core list of formulas.
4. Plan and execute a Chinese herbal treatment through the selection of strategy, assignment of formula and diet, and modification of treatment according to the diagnosis and response of the patient.
5. Apply contemporary ethical, legal, biomedical, and quality control practices related to Chinese herbs.
