Medical Laboratory Science Clinical Training Handbook 2021-2022

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the clinical training students are expected to:

  1. Exhibit knowledge of underlying principles of laboratory performances needed to function at the scientist level. (Cognitive)
  2. Apply appropriate basic techniques while performing analytical procedures used in the clinical training facility. (Psychomotor)
  3. Operate, with ease, the assigned instruments utilizing maintenance protocols and quality control checks. (Cognitive, Psychomotor)
  4. Prepare reagents according to prescribed directions: computing amount of constituent required, selecting appropriate measuring devices and storage containers, correct labeling and storing properly in relation to stability and safety requirements. (Cognitive, Psychomotor)
  5. Follow safety measures (fire drills, first aid, biohazards and chemical hazards); recognize and report unsafe laboratory practices. (Cognitive)
  6. Evaluate results of quality control procedure and correct and/or report discrepancies to the supervisor. (Cognitive)
  7. Organize work in a timely manner by interrelating the preparation of specimens and equipment, completion of tests, calculations, and preparation of reagents (Cognitive, Psychomotor)
  8. Follow oral and written prescribed instructions to carry out analytical procedures. (Cognitive, Affective)
  9. Report results and keep records according to established procedures. (Cognitive)
  10. Demonstrate good rapport with patients: follow patient and specimen identification criteria, select proper collection apparatus, and use appropriate technique for collection specimens by venipuncture or fingersticks, taking care to maintain integrity of specimen. (Cognitive, Psychomotor, Affective)
  11. Demonstrate a professional relationship of consideration and cooperation with supervisors, co-workers, and representatives from other departments. (Affective)
  12. Approach assignments with assurance and check with others when indicated; retain composure and efficiency under stress (Affective)
  13. Demonstrate initiative; check with supervisor when he is done with his work and offer assistance for some other task. (Affective)
  14. Abide by the ethics of all medical professionals in the matter of confidentiality of information regarding patients and test results. (Affective)
  15. Demonstrate professionalism through positive attitudes, appearance and hygiene, attendance, punctuality, telephone technique, and acceptance of constructive criticism. (Affective)
