MLT Program Outcomes
In addition to meeting the University Learning Outcomes, a graduate of the Associate of Science in Medical Laboratory Technology program at NWHSU will be proficient in the following areas:
- Demonstrate entry level competency in collecting, handling, and processing samples according to laboratory policies and procedures.
- Determine the appropriate sample requirements for the requested test(s).
- Perform and/or describe the proper technique for specimen collection.
- Perform and/or describe the appropriate technique for sample handling and processing.
- Demonstrate ability to follow operating procedures to perform accurate and appropriate analytical testing
- Utilize procedures, techniques, and laboratory equipment appropriately, efficiently, and effectively for maintenance, quality control, and patient testing according to laboratory protocol.
- Select and perform appropriate methods and apply theoretical knowledge and concepts when performing laboratory tests.
- Given multiple laboratory requests, prioritize and organize the workload to meet established turnaround times.
- Utilize critical thinking skills to recognize and/or report normal, abnormal, and critical values and take appropriate action.
- Utilize quality assurance procedures to ensure validity and accuracy of laboratory results.
- Evaluate results as normal, abnormal, or critical, and select the appropriate course of action, thus providing the physician with pertinent information related to diagnosis and treatment of the patient.
- Investigate the cause of erroneous laboratory results, and determine and apply the appropriate corrective measures.
- Demonstrate a professional relationship with healthcare workers and patients
- Project an image of confidence and professionalism through appearance, reliability, communication skills, ethical conduct, and attitude.
- Work independently and/or cooperatively with others, maintain composure under environmental stress, and support colleagues to provide quality patient care.
- Actively support the professional organizations for medical laboratory technology through participation and representation.
- Provide quality service to others while demonstrating tolerance and respect for differences including protected classes, nature of illness, and personal attributes
- Protect patients’ and colleagues’ right to privacy by maintaining professional confidentiality.
