Medical Laboratory Technology Clinical Training Handbook 2021-2022

Responsibilities and Expectations

Successful clinical training experiences are not possible without the cooperation between the student, NWHSU, and the clinical affiliate.

 

Responsibilities of NWHSU to the Affiliate

  • Provide orientation to program academic and clinical education philosophy and policies
  • Assign competent and responsible student in as good emotional and physical health as can be reasonably expected
  • Identify strengths and weakness of assigned student to support teaching and learning
  • Collaborate with clinical site preceptor/supervisor to develop student schedules, unless otherwise specified with affiliate
  • Supply appropriate materials including:
    • Attendance record forms
    • Current copies of clinical training handbook and supplemental forms
    • Objectives and competency checklists, with guidelines for assessment
    •  Other materials as requested and appropriate

 

Responsibilities of the Affiliate to NWHSU

  • Support and enforce policies of the Medical Laboratory Technology program
  • Provide feedback on student progress throughout the evaluation process
  • Promptly notify Clinical Coordinator or designee of any student concerns at facility

 

Role of the Clinical Training Supervisor/Preceptor or designee

  • Demonstrate procedures and provide resources to develop essential skills
  • Observe and evaluate student performance using provided checklists
  • Observe and evaluate student attitude and professional being, including relationships with patients and other laboratory staff.
  • Provide attendance information on regularly scheduled basis
  • Communicate student progress and/or concerns with NWHSU personnel to facilitate timely interventions

 

Responsibilities of the Student to the Affiliate

  • Adapt to the physical conditions of the affiliate location
  • Become familiar with use and expectations of departmental equipment
  • Follow hospital and department policies and procedures
  • Follow provided schedule of assignments unless changed by authorized persons
  • Participate in evaluation activities
  • Communicate effectively with clinical site supervisor or designees regarding questions, comments, or concerns in a timely, professional manner 

 

Responsibilities of the Affiliate to the Student

  • Provide the student with an orientation to the facility
  • Provide the student with hospital and departmental policies as appropriate
  • Give assignments with emphasis on laboratory procedures, using provided competency assessments for each department
  • Participate in student evaluation activities throughout the experience
  • Release the student to attend school functions/educational activities as appropriate, with guidance from NWHSU clinical coordinator or designee
  • Support and enforce program policies as outlined in provided handbook and forms
