Accommodations for Students with Disabilities
Qualified persons shall receive reasonable accommodations for access to educational opportunities, programs, and activities of Northwestern Health Sciences University.
The Student Affairs office is responsible for coordination of programs and services for enrolled students with disabilities. In order for the University to provide reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, the following process will be used:
1. It is the responsibility of the individual student to inform the Student Affairs Office of any special aids or services that he/she may need as the result of a disability.
2. Once the Student Affairs Office has been notified of a student’s disability, they will contact the student to start the accommodations process. Students may be required to submit medical or other diagnostic documentation of disability and/or limitations. This information will remain confidential to the Student Affairs office except as permitted by the student expressly for providing support services to that student.
3. As needed, the Student Affairs office will discuss the student's request for accommodation with the student to determine reasonable accommodations. If there is a question about whether an accommodation is reasonable or not, the Student Affairs office will work with the student, faculty, and department. Northwestern will comply with applicable legal requirements in considering requests for accommodations. However, Northwestern will not alter or waive requirements that are integral to the educational program.
4. Requests must be made in a timely manner. Students are encouraged to initiate a request for accommodation week 1 of their first term. Untimely requests may result in a delay of the accommodation process. Accommodations are not retroactive.
5. Complaints concerning the provision of accommodations to students with disabilities will be handled through the Student Complaints process specified in the Student Handbook.
