College of Chiropractic Intern’s Clinic Handbook 2021-2022

7.7 Trimester 7 – 9 Splits Policy and Procedure

It is recommended that interns consecutively complete the 7th through 10th trimesters with no adjusted schedule. However, interns with extenuating circumstances that require a schedule accommodation during the 7th – 9th trimesters may request a Leave of Absence, or a Split Schedule.

Splitting a term may have implications in the following areas:

  • Financial – before determining which option will work best, it is advised to check with Financial Aid to fully consider the financial impact of splitting.
  • Progression through the curriculum – not all courses are available every term. This may cause interns to fall back to a lower term, and extend the date of graduation for one or multiple terms.

Policy:

  1. Interns with extenuating circumstances, for which a Leave is not appropriate, may request a Split Schedule for the 7th, 8th or 9th trimester.
  2. Split Schedule requests must be approved by Clinical Education.
  3. All required courses for the trimester level that is split must be taken prior to continuing on to the subsequent term.
  4. Split Schedules approved by the end of the fourth week of the term incur no financial penalty.
  5. Interns will incur the Split Schedule fee.
  6. Interns who request a Split Schedule are encouraged to consult with the offices of Student Affairs and Financial Aid to discuss the financial and academic consequences of Split Schedules.
  7. There are several options for students who split terms. They vary dependent on the trimester and term in which the student begins the split.

Options for splitting will be created and managed with students on an individual basis. The following items affect all splits:

  • When splitting an internship across two terms, you need to earn at least the minimum number of hours by the end of the second term – T7 (78), T8 (300) and T9 (300).
  • When splitting an internship across two terms, the number of TAC hours will be prorated each term according to the number of weekly internship hours each term. If splitting T7 over two terms, 6 hours TAC are available. If splitting T8 over two terms, 24 hours TAC are available. If splitting T9 over two terms, 27 hours TAC are available.
  • No Internship course can be completed simultaneously with any other Internship course (ex: Clinical Internship 3 and Clinical Internship 4 cannot be completed at the same time).
  • The split terms need to be completed and passed before moving on to the next term.
  • The scheduling and sequencing of courses and clinic hours during the split will be determined by Clinical Education.
  • Existing requirements regarding prerequisite courses are still in effect.

Procedure:

  1. The intern will meet with Clinical Education Program Coordinator to draft a Split schedule that fits the criteria listed in the above Policy.
  2. The intern will then be directed to the Office of the Registrar and Kristin Howell in Student Affairs, who will sign-off on the student’s Split Schedule.
