Medical Assisting Terminal Objectives

Upon completion of the clinical training phase of the MA program at NWHSU, the student will be able to meet the following objectives with a proficiency expected of the Medical Assistant at the job entry level.

The graduates will:

  • Exhibit knowledge of underlying principles of clinical and administrative performances needed to function at the assistant level. (Cognitive Domain)
  • Apply appropriate basic techniques in performing clinical and administrative procedures in use at the clinical training facility. (Psychomotor Domain)
  • Operate with ease, assigned instruments utilizing maintenance protocols and quality control checks. (Psychomotor/Cognitive Domains)
  • Prepare medications according to prescribed directions, computing amount of constituent required, selecting appropriate measuring devices and storage containers; correct labeling and storing properly in relation to stability and safety requirements. (Cognitive/Psychomotor Domains)
  • Administer medications according to acceptable protocol. (Cognitive/Psychomotor Domains)
  • Follow safety measures (fire drills, first aid, biohazards and chemical hazards), recognize and report unsafe clinic practices. (Cognitive Domain)
  • Organize work by interrelating the assemblance of equipment, and completion of task without waste of time. (Psychomotor/Cognitive Domains)
  • Follow oral and written prescribed instructions to carry out designed tasks. (Cognitive/Affective Domains)
  • Report results and keep records according to established procedures. (Cognitive Domain)
  • Demonstrate good rapport with patients; handle reception duties, follow patient and specimen identification criteria; select proper specimen collection apparatus; and use appropriate technique for collection of specimens. (All Domains)
  • Approach assignments with assurance and check with others when indicated. (Affective Domain)
  • Use proper technique when assisting physician with treatment. (All Domains)
  • Demonstrate proficiency in record keeping. (Cognitive Domain)
  • Retain composure and efficiency under stress of increased workload and time schedules. (Affective Domain)
  • Demonstrate initiative-check with supervisor when his/her work is done and offer assistance for some other task. (Affective Domain)
  • Abide by the ethics of all medical professionals in the matter of confidentiality of information regarding patients. (Affective Domain)
  • Demonstrate effectiveness in professional attitudes in the following area: appearance, hygiene, attendance, punctuality, telephone technique, acceptance of constructive criticism. (Affective Domain)
  • Recognize and accept the difference in on-the-job responsibilities between health care workers with varied educational background. (Affective Domain)
