Program Learning Outcomes

In addition to meeting the University Learning Outcomes, a graduate of the Bachelor of Science completion program in Medical Laboratory Science at NWHSU will be proficient in the following areas:

  1. Communication
    • Effectively present laboratory healthcare concepts, both written and oral, appropriate to the audience.
  2. Information Management
    • Operate lab equipment while evaluating, correlating and ensuring accuracy and validity of laboratory information.
    • Correlate test results with specific diseases and disorders.
    • Manage data to enable effective, timely, accurate and cost-effective reporting.
    • Analyze, report and interpret laboratory statistics to ensure high quality lab results, identify sources of possible system error, implement and monitor continuous laboratory assessment programs.
  3. Performance Proficiency
    • Develop and establish procedures to collect and process biological specimens according to professional standards.
    • Recognize and follow established laboratory safety policies according to professional standards.
    • Demonstrate ability to perform all laboratory activities independently and collaboratively, being responsible for own actions, as defined by the profession.
    • Demonstrate high quality patient care using appropriate demeanor and judgement.
  4. Analysis and Decision Making
    • Perform pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical processes within the laboratory.
    • Troubleshoot and problem solve by formulating and implementing solutions while maintaining proper procedures to maintain accuracy, precision and high-quality patient care.
  5. Managing Resources
    • Execute cost effective laboratory procedures and services.
    • Apply effective leadership skills in collaboration with laboratory professionals to offer value added services.
    • In a medical environment, demonstrate the ability to provide orientation to new employees and update requisite knowledge and skills of other laboratory professionals.
  6. Quality Assessment
    • Monitor the research and testing of biological specimens to meet quality standards.
    • Ensure policies, procedures and forms are in compliance with regulatory agencies.
  7. Ethics
    • Demonstrate ethical and moral attitudes and principles necessary for gaining and maintaining the confidence of patients, professional associates and the community in accordance with the profession and the institution.
