Radiation Therapy Program Clinical Education Handbook

Clinical Education Master Plan

This is a guideline for students in clinical education. It may be possible for a student to spend more or less time in any of these areas if the clinic staff and/or clinical supervisor deem those changes appropriate.

Clin Ed Master Plan

  • Students may start in any given area as determined by the clinical site. The nursing rotation is sometimes a nice introduction to the department as it is where the patients begin in the department. Simulation may make sense prior to the treatment machine rotation and again after treatment machine rotation.
  • These hours DO NOT have to be consecutive. Length of rotation is at the discretion of the Clinical Supervisor. Any time increment is fine, as long as makes sense, is sufficient, and all the area rotation hours are eventually completed.
  • In the event that the student has not completed all their competencies in an area in the allotted time, the elective hours may be used. The elective hours may also be used for anything that does not “fit” into another category, such as tumor conference/chart rounds, in-services, or rotations to other clinics near the end of the clinical training. It may also be used to lengthen another rotation in which the student requires more time. Students should also spend at least a few days learning the phone, filing and charting systems of the department/clinic. This can also be counted as elective time.
  • IF, at the end of 1440 hours, a student has been unable to complete the competency requirements, he/she/they will meet with the Clinical Supervisor, Clinical Coordinator, and the Program Chair to discuss additional hours of training as be needed. Additional hours will ONLY be advised when a student has demonstrated sufficient progress and the ability and aptitude necessary for a radiation therapist.
  • The student will sign a contract or Plan of Action outlining the specific requirements and a timeline for completion of additional clinic experience.
