Personnel Dosimetry Exposure Notification Policy

The National Council on Radiation Protection created the ALARA Concept (As Low As Reasonably Achievable). The ALARA concept was created for the occupational worker, establishing guidelines for radiation exposure. All occupational workers following safe radiation practices should not receive more than one-tenth of the maximum permissible dose in an exposure period (125mrem per quarter). Therefore, students who receive a personnel dosimetry report that exceeds one-tenth of the maximum permissible dose in any exposure period will be required to fill out an exposure notification form and be interviewed by the RT program chair.

Purpose:

To provide students working in radiation areas with notification procedures that track exposure doses beyond the level that the ALARA Concept recommends. Students are all encouraged to review their dosimetry reports and will be notified when they are available.

Procedure:

  • Upon receipt of dosimetry reports, students will be notified they are available for review. Students may make an appointment to review their report or may request via e-mail to hdanig@nwhealth.edu and a report will be returned as an attachment.
  • All personnel dosimetry reports will be reviewed by the radiation safety officer or their designee.
  • Personnel dosimetry reports over 125 mrem per quarter (3 months) will require the exposure notification report. Upon completion of the notification, report an interview with the RT program chair if necessary to protect the safety of any students working in radiation areas and receiving measurable levels of radiation.

Clinical Training Badge Distribution and Return:

  • Students participating in CT1 and CT2 will have their film badges sent directly to the radiology suite of their clinical site prior to their arrival.
  • Students must keep the control badge supplied to send back if necessary
  • Badges should be returned to campus in person if possible. A prepaid envelope will be available to return the badge if this is not possible.
  • Badges should be returned within 5 days of the end of the semester.
