Radiologic Technology Clinical Training Handbook

Student Supervision

Supervision of Radiologic Technology Students

  • Students must have adequate supervision during all clinical assignments.
  • Students must perform all medical imaging procedures under the direct supervision of a qualified radiologic  technologist (a radiologic technologist employed a minimum of 6 months at the clinical training site) until students achieve competency.
  • After demonstrating competency, students may be permitted to perform procedures under indirect/limited supervision of a qualified radiologic technologist who is immediately available to assist students regardless of the level of student achievement.
  • Immediately available is interpreted as the presence of qualified radiologic technologist adjacent to the room or location where a radiographic procedure is being performed. The technologist must be available to hear a student who is in need of assistance.  This availability applies to all areas where ionizing radiation equipment is in use.
  • Students are not allowed to perform independently those exams they have not gained competency in.
  • The student must be under direct supervision when working in the Operating Room, Angiographic facilities, CT, MRI, Mammography, or with traumatic spine patients in the Emergency Room, during the entire clinical training internship.

A qualified registered radiologic technologist:

  • Reviews the procedure and evaluates the condition of the patient in relation to the student’s skill.
  • Is present during the entire procedure.
  • Reviews and approves the procedure and its radiographs.
  • Is present during student repeat radiographs during the entire clinical training rotation. There are no exceptions to this policy.

1:1 Ratio

Students must have a 1:1 student to radiography clinical staff ratio at all clinical education settings. Departments must be staffed to support student rotations. This ratio is established upon recognition and is reviewed each semester at clinical site visits.
